Description
Copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus), also known as the beaked coral fish.
- They are easily identifiable by their long, narrow snout and four yellow-orange vertical bands edged in black.
- A prominent black “eyespot” (ocellus) is located on the rear of the dorsal fin, which helps confuse predators.
- The fish uses its elongated beak to hunt for small prey like benthic invertebrates, tubeworms, and crustaceans within coral crevices.
- Native to the Indo-Pacific and Indian Oceans, they can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length.
- In aquariums, they are considered difficult to care for and require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons.
